Canonical Has Launched The First Point Release of The Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Operating System

Canonical has managed to push out the first point release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus GNU/Linux based operating system on all supported systems.

Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS is a remedy to all bug patches, app updates as well as security fixes that were issued to the operating system since it was launched back in April.

The new release image is quite handy for those on metered or slow networks that are looking to install Canonical’s desktop operating system as the brand new easily-deployable image will not require huge amounts of megabytes worth of updates right after installation.

Aside from not having to start from scratch with the installation – for those that have Ubuntu 16.04 LTS already installed –, the new point release will add support for new and improved hardware features but doesn’t include a new Hardware Enablement Stack.

The new release ships with the same Linux Kernel and xserver but Ubuntu 16.04.2 which is slated for release in February 2017 will ship with a new stack that is derived from Ubuntu 16.10.

Below is a list of Canonical’s Kernel release schedule.

Other new features include webbrowser-app, Snap app support in the Ubuntu Software, and there’s an improved low-graphics mode for the Unity desktop when running in virtual machines or on less capable devices.

With vlan connection type, finish-install.d would decide to purge network configuration and writeout loopback interfaces only, due to the assumption that !wired, must be wireless. Write out loopback only config with wireless only connection type. With this change vlan settings propagate through to the system, after additional network-manager changes were added. LP: #1567687.
